Man merkt deutlich: Brisbane, die Hauptstadt von Queensland, ist bereits tropisch beeinflusst. In Melbourne ist es gerade Frühling, hier sind die Temperaturen wie in Europas Sommer. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen großen Städten hat Brisbane eine Fußgängerzone - man hat den Busbahnhof in einen Tunnel darunter verbannt.
  Der Name des Regierungsgebäudes, Queensland Government Treasury, weist auf die Geschichte der Stadt hin - sie wurde im 1823 als Strafkolonie Moreton Bay gegründet, Um 1842 wurde der Ort auch für freie Siedler geöffnet, erst 1849 brachte ein presbyterianischer Geistlicher 630 Siedler hierher. Weit weg von der Hauptstadt der Kolonie New South Wales, Sydney, fühlten sich die Einwohner von Brisbane vernachlässigt und forderten die Trennung von dieser Kolonie. Allein ein Blick auf die Entfernung lässt ahnen, warum. Queen Victoria erfüllte den Wunsch, eine eigene Kolonie zu bilden, um 1859 - ein großes Jubiläum, das Queensland dieses Jahr feiert und mit einer Ausstellung zu seiner Geschichte im Queensland Museum würdigt. Um 1903 erhielt Brisbane das Stadtrecht, um 1954 hatte es 500.000 Einwohner, heute ca. 2 Millionen. Zur modernen Großstadt mit Niederlassungen großer internationaler Unternehmen wurde es ab 1970 mit dem Bergbauboom.

Far away from the capital of the colony New South Whales, Sydney, the inhabitants of Brisbane felt neglected and allowed to be separated from it. Looking at the distance one sees, there is no wonder, why. Queen Victoria granted the wish to be an own colony in 1859 - a great jubilee. Queensland celebrates this year and honours it by an exhibition in the Queensland Museum. Brisbane itself became a city in 1903, in 1954 500,000 inhabitants lived here, they are about 2 Mill. now. Brisbane became a modern, large city, where subsidiaries of large international companies are located, beginning with the mining boom in the 1970es.
